What is Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis is a natural state of heightened awareness,  or an altered state of consciousness, which is accessed through deep physical relaxation and a laser-sharp, mental  focus of attention on a single idea or concept. During hypnosis, this narrow focus of attention is turned inwards, allowing you to become more aware of your inner world while the external world fades into the background and loses its importance.  Also, during this blend of physical relaxation and extreme mental alertness suggestibility becomes heightened, which means that the mind becomes more receptive to new ideas or images.

Also known as trance, hypnosis uses the natural power of the unconscious mind to create positive and beneficial changes. We all  experience natural trance-like states on a daily basis usually during relaxation times when our metabolism, heart rate and breathing rates slow down and as a result our brain waves also change from Beta (waking state) to Alpha  (quiet, receptive and relaxed state).  Some examples of typical ‘Alpha’ states are daydreaming, meditation, watching TV or a film, driving without being aware of landmarks,   reading a book, or being engrossed in a favourite hobby  etc. We also pass through the ‘Alpha’ state each time we go to and wake up from sleep.

Hypnotherapy is a natural and drug free way of achieving change through a relaxed and focused awareness.  It’s a positive and powerful psychological tool that creates shifts and breakthroughs in every area of one’s life, as well as creating the right conditions for change.

With hypnotherapy you can quickly and easily resolve many emotional, psychological or physical problems that may be causing distress or pain in your day to day life,  through identifying and releasing “bottled-up-emotions” which are usually the root cause of these symptoms; once the root cause is identified through relevant treatment and therapy, the symptoms normally improve, and in most cases disappear for good.

How does Hypnotherapy work?

Hypnosis is a way of stepping over or bypassing the conscious mind (intellectual, reasoning, logical mind) and accessing the unconscious mind (intuitive, resourceful, creative mind) to make powerful and profound changes to the thought processes, behavioural patterns, as well as the beliefs systems of an individual. It is often described as a ‘door’ opening from the conscious mind to the subconscious mind  as a way of gaining access to the untapped resources we all carry deep  within the recesses of our mind. Mainly, hypnosis  enables the individual to use his/her subconscious resources for changing their behaviour.

There are two main ways of using hypnotherapy – Suggestion Hypnotherapy and Analytical Hypnotherapy. Together we discuss the best treatment option for you and sometimes it may be a combination of both approaches. The hypnosis part is not a treatment in itself but a good way to prepare you to “open the door” and reach into  the subconscious part of your mind which controls your deeper emotions, beliefs and behaviours. When you are stressed, angry or anxious, you can’t think clearly as your emotions are out of your control. With hypnosis you can learn to slow down, relax, and focus your mind whenever you need to,  and therefore put yourself in a position where you can take back control.

Hypnotherapy can be both brief, solution focused therapy, or more long term, open ended.  This very much depends  on the nature, complexity and severity of your symptoms or difficulties,  and your goals for therapy or your desired outcome.

It’s important to note that Hypnotherapy, whether suggestive or analytical,  isn’t a quick fix. The therapist cannot wave a magic wand and make all your problems disappear. This is a collaborative relationship between therapist and client.  My main role, as your therapist, is to facilitate, support and guide you to your own resources, answers,  and capabilities for change and healing, your role as the client  is to to remain open minded and be a 100% committed to your own progress and recovery.

Suggestion Hypnotherapy (Clinical Hypnosis)

Suggestion Hypnotherapy, also known as Clinical Hypnosis,  is used to create a relaxed and calm hypnotic state, where you will be wide awake and fully in control.  Once you are in a nice and relaxed state of mind and body,  you will be given positive suggestions and ‘post hypnotic suggestions’ that will effect your behaviour and feelings once you are out of the hypnotic state.  With relaxation it’s possible to communicate directly with the subconscious mind, without interference from the conscious or critical/analytical mind. In this heightened or altered state of awareness the subconscious mind becomes more receptive to accepting ideas and suggestions for change – it readily accepts and acts upon them.

This form of therapy tends to be brief (typically 6 – 12 sessions) and is ideal for helping people cope with such things as exam or interview nerves, issues of low confidence, public speaking, stop smoking, habits such as nail biting, sports performance,  weight-control and sleep problems, tension and stress, to name a few. Suggestion Hypnotherapy is highly beneficial for the client, as the main aim of suggestion hypnotherapy is to encourage positive behaviour, release tension, boost confidence  and create emotional stability.

Most often Suggestion Hypnotherapy is combined with Counselling/PsychotherapyAnalytical Hypnotherapy, and NLP techniques in order to address  more deep rooted emotional or psychological problems, and to ensure that a deeper level of healing and transformation is achieved.

Analytical Hypnotherapy
(Hypnoanalysis/Regression Therapy)

Analytical hypnotherapy, also known as Hypnoanalysis & Regression Therapy,  is an effective form of therapy for the resolution of deep rooted psychological and emotional problems/symptoms, such as anxiety & panic attacksphobias &  fears, eating disorders, low moods, low self worth, poor body image, complex weight issues etc. Hypnoanalysis allows you to explore, identify and let go of the root cause of your  emotional or psychological problems (which are usually painful events from the past) that are being manifested as destructive behaviours or physical symptoms in your current life.

Once direct communication with the subconscious mind has been established through hypnosis, Analytical Hypnotherapy can begin (if needed for more deep rooted problems).

Analytical Hypnotherapy, also known as Regression Therapy, guides  the subconscious mind backwards through time, searching through past memories and experiences in order to identify the  underlying root cause of any given problem, and then to release and resolve the attached emotions.  It is at this level that  all your unwanted behaviour/s – eg  habits, negative self-talk, phobias, addictions, or painful memories etc – can be dealt with once and for all.

With hypnoanalysis  the root cause of a problem can be accessed , and once the issues are uncovered they can be worked through in the most appropriate way for you,  to ensure that you achieve your desired outcomes. Therapy can be brief or open ended and can take anything from 12 to 24 sessions or until you feel satisfied with your progress, healing and recovery; the number of sessions depends on a number of factors, including how well you’re responding to treatment.

In most cases, hypnoanalytical techniques prove very successful in identifying and resolving the underlying original cause of most subconscious anxieties, fears, negative or destructive behaviours, and in leaving you free from your symptoms for life.  This method of therapy can be highly effective if you are willing to approach the therapy with a sense of curiosity, flexibility in attitude and mind, and only if you are willing to believe and trust in the therapeutic process wholeheartedly.  By expecting and believing in the healing power of your own mind and by taking full responsibility for making the changes you seek, you will be able to let go of your emotional and/or physical suffering once and for all.

Analytical Hypnotherapy can create the right circumstances for you to powerfully change your perspective on your life and problems, so that  your thought processes,  belief systems, and behaviours can be positively altered.  When this happens you can take back control of your life and you can respond more appropriately to any given situation. It can be a very liberating and empowering experience, if you are willing to stretch yourself beyond your comfort zone, and explore the emotions that are sometimes deeply hidden.
